We welcome international doctors and researchers who wish to observe clinical and research activities at the Department of Surgery, Kyoto University Hospital.
Our department is a leading center for gastrointestinal surgery in Japan, providing advanced treatments and pursuing cutting-edge research in oncology and minimally invasive surgery.
Doctors who wish to learn about robot-assisted surgery and surgical assistant AI are especially encouraged to apply.
Through this program, participants can gain valuable insights into modern Japanese surgical practice and academic collaboration.
Medical doctors or researchers specializing in gastrointestinal surgery, oncology, or related fields.
Type: Observership (no clinical practice)
Duration: Typically 1 – 5 days
Application timing: The start date should be at least 1–2 months after submitting the application.
Observation style: Observation only — participation in direct patient care or procedures is not permitted.
The participation fee is 51,000 JPY per person per visit.
Payment details will be provided upon acceptance.
Participants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, insurance, and living expenses.
Kyoto University Hospital does not provide financial aid or accommodation arrangements.
Daily communication within the hospital is primarily in Japanese.
English is used for academic and clinical discussions. A good command of spoken English is essential (recommended level: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 60, or equivalent).
English skill certificate submission is required (TOEIC, IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo is permitted).
All participants must provide proof of immunity or vaccination for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (two documented vaccinations or antibody titers).
A certificate will be issued upon completion of the observership (for visits exceeding three days).
Visitors are advised to arrange their own accommodation near the Kyoto University Hospital area.
Kyoto offers a wide range of safe and convenient lodging options with good access to public transportation.
